BS25999 is the emerging standard for Business Continuity Management. It is scheduled to be published late in 2006 and early in 2007, in two parts.

It will have a major impact upon BCM as a whole, and will undoubtedly become a world wide force very quickly indeed.

This is the first regular newsletter dedicated to this standard.

This portal will become a major hub for individual news items, which in turn will be aggregated into a periodic newsletter.

Your input is always appreciated, so please feel free to contact us directly or via the comment forms onboard. All suggestions and ideas for new facilities are welcome.

BSI are offering the standard via their Standard Direct outlet's BS25999 Download Page

For sufferers of technophobia it can be obtained on paper via their main site BSI Global

Finally, it is offered with a number of BCM support items as part of the BS 25999 Toolkit

  • We are currently testing the draft version of our BS25999 dedicated Forum. Please feel free to contribute and comment when it is published.
  • As the business continuity world awakens to the implication of the new standard, sites, services and resources are already beginning to appear.

  • The first dedicated website appears to be 25999continuity.com, narrowly pipping us to pole position! Another early runner is BS 25999 BCM from W3J, although this strictly speaking is a subsite. The first PAS56 site was pas56.com, which now covers both BS25999 & PAS56.

  • When a sufficient number of web resources emerge, we will review them in some detail within a specific section.

  • General: Standardization
  • BSI state that it is for: anyone with the responsibility for business operations and the continuity of such operations from board directors and chief executives through all levels of the organization.

BS25999-1 Draft for Public Comment Version Published

The draft version of BS25999 has now been published. As the title infers, this version is intended for third party consideration and comment, and is available from BSI.

As expected, it is loosely based upon PAS 56. The Table of Contents is as follows:

BS25999-1 DPC Table of Contents

This will now be open for 60 days. After that period the comments will be considered, and the final standard published in November.

The Timetable for BS25999

The "draft" of the first part of the standard, BS25999-1, is expected to be issued for public comment early in July 2006. This comment stage lasts for 60 days.

Thereafter, incoming comments will be analyzed, with a sceduled target date for final publication of November 2006.

Work on the second part (BS25999-2) is scheduled to begin in July, with final publication expected early in 2007. However, it will take most of that year for third party accreditation to be put in place.

The BS25999 Format

The standard will comtprise TWO distinct documents:

Part 1: Code of Practice for Business Continuity Management

Part 2: A Specification for Business Continuity Management

The former is loosely based upon PAS56 (see below). However, the specification, as is usual, will be the document upon which certification will be based.

The BS25999 View of BCM

BS25999 views BCM as an activity unifying a broad spectrum of business activities. It sees this as being directly linked to corporate governance, but not limited to IT.

The following diagram illustrates this:

PAS 56 (Publicly Available Standard)

PAS56 was the forerunner of BS25999. It was pubslished in March 2003 by BSI, with the official title 'Guide to Business Continuity Management'. The characters 'PAS' stand for 'Publicly Available Specification'.. and is a common pre-standard publication stage.

The PAS56 document will be withdrawn when BS25999 is finally pubslished.
